Coaching community sport can be one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. Northside Wizards Basketball (NWB) is always looking for new people to join our coaching community. Volunteering to coach your child’s team is a great place to start, and if you would like to continue your coaching journey there are plenty more opportunities available. Below is the coaching pathway available to all coaches within NWB.

Grass Roots Coaching
Wiz Kidz Coaches must hold at minimum the Community Coach accreditation. Held at multiple venues throughout the northern suburbs, Wiz Kidz is often the first experience many children and their families have with NWB and the sport of basketball. Coaches need the ability to teach primary school aged children the skills and rules required to play basketball in a fun and engaging manner.Â
Holiday Clinic Coaches must hold at minimum the Community Coach accreditation. Held during school holidays at central venues, these clinics offer players additional opportunities to have fun, make new friends, and develop their basketball skills. Similar to Wiz Kidz, coaches need a repertoire of games and activities to engage players whilst simultaneously developing their skills and understanding of how the game should be played.

Domestic Competition CoachingÂ
Junior Club Coaches should hold at minimum the Community Coach accreditation. NWB facilitates both boys and girls club competitions on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, during the school term. Each team requires a game coach that also facilitates training once a week.

Junior Representative Coaching
Head & Assistant Rep Coaches must hold at minimum the Club Coach accreditation and in some cases the Association Coach accreditation. Northside Wizards representative teams compete against other associations from around Queensland in the quest to be crowned State Champions. ‘Rep’ teams train twice a week and play games on a home and away basis in the SQJBC competition, culminating in the Queensland State Championships.Â
Rep Ready Coaches must hold at minimum the Club Coach accreditation. Rep development programs are accessible to current and aspiring representative players and coaches who want to develop their skills and access alternative coaching opportunities. These are facilitated by NWB during school terms and in the lead up to each upcoming representative season.Â

Senior Representative Coaching
Senior Head & Assistant Coaches must hold at minimum the Association Coach accreditation. Northside Wizards enter senior men’s and women’s teams in to the NBL1 and QSL competitions. Games are held on weekends on a home and away basis throughout Queensland. Senior Representative coaches must have prior experience coaching at representative and/or senior levels.
Senior Development Coaches must hold at minimum the Association Coach accreditation. Up and coming coaches have the opportunity to watch and learn from more experienced coaches by taking on a development position within the senior representative program.Â

Basketball Queensland Coaching
Aspire Program Coaches should hold at minimum the Association Coach accreditation. Each year Basketball Queensland (BQ) offers up to 40 State Team volunteer coaching positions (plus a number of Emerging Team coaching positions) to help coaches across the State further their development.
Coaches are invited to work with our Queensland U16, U18 and U20 State Teams, as well as our High Performance Emerging Teams (Future Development Program), culminating in National competitions such as the Australian Junior Championships (AJC).
These volunteer coaching positions have served as an excellent development pathway for coaches aspiring to coach in the NBL1 and Australian National Youth Team level.
State Performance Program Coaches should hold at minimum the Association Coach accreditation. The SPP involves the systematic and progressive identification, selection and development of athletes in the Under 15 to Under 20 age groups. Coaches who have demonstrated the ability to perform at the highest levels of junior basketball need to either apply or be invited to be involved with the SPP.Â
State and Development Team Coaches should hold at minimum the Association Coach accreditation. Queensland’s elite junior athletes compete at the Australian Junior Championships each year in Under 20, Under 18 and Under 16 age groups.Â
