Cathie Roberts

Northside Wizards Basketball General Manager Cathie started as a volunteer in the early 1990’s and gradually added coaching, refereeing and scoretable qualifications to her resume. Cathie managed Northside Wizards on a part-time basis when the organisation had some 500 members then took on a full-time Administrator role in 2004, doing everything from coaching teams, processing registrations and managing the competitions. Cathie is working with staff and volunteers to build a bigger and better Association as we prepare for the most exciting chapter yet, with our new 5-court basketball facility set to open in 2020.

Chris Angus

Chris joined the Northside Wizards Basketball team in September 2020 as the Competitions & Events Manager. Chris brings with him close to 15 years’ worth of experience in the Competitions, Participation and Sports Management fields. Originally from Victoria where he spent 3 years as the Business Operations Manager at the Western Port Basketball Association and then nearly 8 years as the School Programs Manager at Basketball Victoria overseeing the state wide school competitions and programs for both Primary and Secondary schools.  In 2018 he relocated with his young family to Brisbane as the Competitions Manager at Southern Districts Basketball Association where he successfully grew their junior domestic competition to one of the largest in Queensland.

Chris will be responsible for the planning, development and management of all Northside Wizards Basketball competitions and will oversee the planning and facilitation of the many events we want to host each year. Competition administration and support will continue to be delivered by current Wizards staff member Jordan Gregurke. Chris will also act as delegate for our Junior Representative and Senior Representative programs.

Chris brings with him a great wealth of knowledge, professionalism and management experience. He looks forward to building some great things here on the Northside.

Jordan joined the Northside Wizards Basketball team as Competitions Manager in early 2018 bringing with him a breadth of experience in the Sport and Recreational management field. Originally from South Australia, Jordan commenced his passion for basketball at a young age and has undertaken roles including coaching, umpiring, facilities, events and competition management, complemented by qualifications in Sport & Recreation and Facility Management. Jordan looks forward to continue working with Northside Wizards Basketball and its affiliated clubs to provide quality competitions and meet the demands for basketball in the northern suburbs of Brisbane.

Coaching Director
Don McCarron

Don was recruited to the role of Coaching Director in 2014 to assist with the development of representative programs and associated pathways. With a background in player and coach development working for Basketball Queensland, this builds upon his prior experience in competition management and as a player coach in NSW and NT. To date Don has assisted Northside Wizards with the resurrection of a senior women’s representative program, the implementation of a completely new girls league (NGBL) which has more than quadrupled in size since its inception, and expanded the representative program to the highest number of teams Wizards has nominated at representative level. Don’s position continues to evolves, now reaching deeper into education needs for an ever expanding club membership.

Lucian McGuinness

Lucian has returned to his role as the Wizard’s Development Officer originally holding the position between 2011 and 2014. In this time Lucian was responsible for the creation of new clubs, including the Brendale Bobcats, Chermside Redbacks and North Lakes Hawks, as well as the facilitation of our award winning Wiz Kidz recruitment program. Basketball has long been a passion for Lucian, having played representative basketball with the Brisbane Capitals and Queensland as a junior. As a senior he played 10 years in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) representing the Brisbane Capitals, Coastal Suns and Northside Wizards, retiring as captain of the Wizards in 2012. Lucian continues to play socially and you will see him running around on the court in our local competitions.

Referee Development Manager Calia Hanks

Calia joined the NWB team in January 2020 after taking two years off working in basketball to Practice Manage a physiotherapy clinic. Originally a player, Calia decided to become a referee at 12 and has alternated between playing and refereeing until 3 years ago when she decided to pursue refereeing. Along the way she became a referee instructor to learn more about the world of refereeing, and has loved giving back to the junior programs and commissioning numerous State Championships. Having also coached, managed and scored, she brings a holistic view of the game to her role and values the importance of all the stakeholders in the game.

Her current goals in her role as referee development manager are to bring currency to the knowledge of the referees, provide mechanical direction to create better coverage of the floor and trial new concepts of referee education.
